The White Temple

 

Wat Rong Khun, also known as the White Temple, is a breathtaking Buddhist temple located in Chiang Rai and regarded as one of the most prominent attractions built in this century.The temple is a modern architectural masterpiece designed and built by Ajarn Chalermchai Kositpipat, a famous national artist. This controversial place of warship unites traditional Buddhist temple elements with contemporary and surreal artistry. One of the most distinctive features of the temple is its white color scheme, which symbolizes purity and the Buddha's teachings. 

 

The impressive Ubosot (ordination hall) is the main building at the White Temple, decorated with a pattern of silver mirrors and is reached by crossing a bridge guarded by eight demons on each side. In front of the bridge are hundreds of outreaching hands that symbolize unrestrained human desire. Crossing the bridge teaches that the way to happiness is only found by overcoming greed, allurement and devotion.
